Activated charcoal has long been used to benefit the health and appearance of skin, hair and teeth but could it really help with hair growth too? Today I answer this question whilst also giving my top tips for applying activated charcoal to the hair.
What is activated charcoal?
First off, let me just explain what exactly activated charcoal is because, despite what you might think, this is not the same stuff you’ll find in your fireplace or on the BBQ in summer.
Activated charcoal is a substance that comes about when charcoal is heated to a very high temperature and is then treated with oxygen. This increases its surface area meaning it is able to absorb toxins and other substances from the skin, hair, teeth and more.
How does it encourage hair growth?
Activated charcoal makes a good hair care ingredient because it draws out impurities from the scalp and the hair itself. This includes dirt and oil, as well as chemicals that build up when regularly using harsh shampoos and conditioners. This helps to improve the overall appearance of the hair but it also makes it healthier too. You can encourage the hair to grow faster by keeping it strong and healthy so in this way activated charcoal promotes a longer style. However, by giving your scalp a detox and clearing the hair follicles, activated charcoal further contributes to hair growth.
How to apply activated charcoal
When using activated charcoal it is best to go as natural as possible and so here at Jan de Vries that’s why we like to recommend Optima’s Activated Charcoal Purifying Shampoo. Here the activated charcoal works to remove impurities to keep the hair healthy whilst the addition of organic fruit and plant extracts such as Aloe Vera and Grapefruit encourage softer, smoother looking strands.
To give your hair the best chance of growth you could couple the shampoo with Optima’s Activated Charcoal Purifying Conditioner. Again, this is full of nutrients such as Argan Oil which help to moisturise the hair and improve its overall appearance and health.
If you want to give either of these products a try then simply swap your usual brand of shampoo and conditioner for this more natural option. With regular use you should see a change in the health of your hair and eventually in the length of it too – it really is that simple!
Other tips for hair growth
Using an activated charcoal shampoo is just one of a long list of things you can do to encourage hair growth so what else should you do to help the process?
- Get regular haircuts – this gets rid of split ends which, over time, can spread up each strand of hair meaning that when you do eventually get round to going to the hairdressers, you’ll need to get more chopped off
- Avoid heat – this can damage the hair which, as we now know, isn’t what we want when trying to grow the hair. To discover how to straighten your hair without damaging it I’d highly recommend you have a look at my colleague Ayesha’s blog where she discusses the topic in detail
- Eat a wide range of nutrients – from iron to omega 3, a diet with a wide range of nutrients can also promote hair growth
- Wear your hair down – hair bobbles can cause the hair to break and so it will take longer to achieve the long style that you want. So, wear your hair down a little more often and see if you notice a difference to the health and length of your hair!
