A simple morning skincare routine for ageing skin

Establishing a good skincare routine is one of the most important things you can do for your skin but it’s important to not only find a skincare routine that fits in with your busy schedule, but also one that works for your skin type! Here at Jan de Vries we know and love the fact that every single person has a different skin complexion which is why we’ve created an easy and simple morning skincare routine specially tailored for those of you with ageing skin.

Good morning beautiful skin!

When we wake up in the morning our first thought isn’t always our skin, and, let’s be honest who has time for a complicated and long skincare routine? However that doesn’t mean that your skincare routine should fly out the window in the morning! Try our simple steps below using PHB’s all-natural products and your skin will feel nourished and refreshed in no time for the day ahead!

Step 1: A rejuvenating facial wash

Why? As we age the lower levels of the skin create new cells which migrate to the surface of the skin, a process which takes around 30 days or so. This process involves not only the growth and appearance of new skin cells but the shedding of the old, dead ones. As we age this shedding slows down and can become uneven leading to dry and dull skin.

Exfoliation can help along this natural process however many exfoliators can be harsh on skin and create tiny microscopic tears that can make the appearance of fine lines even more noticeable! As you age your skin naturally becomes drier and overdoing it with chemically pumped, harsh face scrubs can remove even more of the skin’s natural essential oils that help to keep skin soft. Therefore, I’d suggest using a rejuvenating facial wash instead that doesn’t contain any damaging microbeads or harsh particles that can cause sensitivity and irritation.

Our favourite facial wash for ageing skin? PHB’s Anti-Aging Facial Wash with Mandarin & Pomegranate! This facial wash combines the tropical fragrances of Mandarin and Pomegranate to bring you a gentle, but rejuvenating cleanse that helps to improve the appearance and texture of skin. Pomegranate has incredible skin renewal properties and is rich in essential nutrients and fatty acids that help to fight signs of ageing and encourage a more youthful looking complexion. Mandarin oil invigorates the skin and is packed full of friendly antioxidants which help skin appear more youthful by helping to plump out the skin, prevent free radical damage and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

How often?  You should use this gentle face wash at least once a day to help clean skin whilst also providing a light hydration to prevent dryness.

Step 2: Refresh skin with a facial tonic

Why? Face tonics are a fantastic addition for a dry skincare routine! Tonics are best used after a cleanser to help balance out the pH levels in your skin. What are pH levels and what do they have to do with your skin? Your pH levels refer to the acid/alkaline balance in your body and, actually, the skin is one of the more acidic areas which can easily become disrupted through our diet and the use of products that may not work well with our skin.

Tonics clean and tighten pores which not only makes skin visibly smoother but also makes it more difficult for dirt to collect there. Finally, tonics can also provide an extra layer of hydration giving your skin an extra little boost when it needs it.

Our favourite tonic for aging skin? PHB’s Anti-Aging Facial Tonic with Melissa! This alcohol-free and oil-free toner doesn’t strip away moisture but adds it through the nourishing botanical power of Melissa, a natural astringent that helps to keep skin firm and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Melissa contains a range of wonderful properties for our skin; it is naturally cleansing and purifying, calming and also rich in antioxidants to help fight signs of aging.

This tonic is also super versatile and can be used after cleansing, before and after makeup application or any time your skin is feeling tired, stressed or overheated. Try keeping this toner in the fridge for an instant skin refresh on those super-hot summer days!

How often? It’s important not to overdo it on the toner because overuse can trick your skin into overproducing excess oil – even for dry or aging skin! So, for more mature skin types I’d suggest using a toner once a day and only increasing this to twice daily if you feel as though you need a little boost such as during winter.

Step 3: Moisturise with a moisturiser suited to your skin

Why? Moisturiser is an absolute must in any skincare routine but it’s important to take the time to find a moisturiser that works for your skin type! What makes it tricky is that there are hundreds and hundreds of moisturisers out there – and not all of them are good for your skin!

Our favourite day cream for aging skin? PHB’s Anti-Aging Moisturiser with Monoi Oil and Gardenia! Based on an ancient Polynesian formula, containing handpicked ingredients such as Gardenia Flowers and nourishing Monoi Oil, this is the perfect moisturiser to hydrate and nourish skin. Gardenia flowers helps to encourage collagen synthesis and prevent collagen degradation helping to maintain firmness and elasticity to keep skin looking and feeling supple.

How often? Moisturising regularly can help you to achieve silky soft skin but figuring out how often you should moisturise can take a little bit of trial and error at first. Making sure you have a tip top moisturiser with natural ingredients is important as these ingredients will get absorbed directly into the skin and bloodstream. For more mature skin I’d recommend that you use PHB’s Anti-Aging Moisturiser with Monoi Oil and Gardenia twice daily - once in the morning and again in the evening to restore skin.

Here at Jan de Vries we like to nourish and look after skin at its source rather than encourage people to cover up with makeup and hide. That being said we do love using and promoting natural makeup that is also good for your skin, so we decided to include makeup as an optional extra in your skincare routine for those of you who already wear it. Whether you have dry, mature, oily, sensitive or normal skin, it’s important to find good quality makeup that works for your skin type.

Luckily PHB have the perfect natural makeup range that, like their skincare products, are completely natural and cruelty-free. PHB Beauty are a UK-based ethical beauty company who create nourishing, natural products that work in harmony with your skin.

After you’ve completed your morning skincare routine why not apply PHB’s organic liquid foundation? This skin-loving liquid foundation is available in a variety of skin tones from extremely fair to extremely tanned and is the perfect natural alternative to conventional foundations.

PHB pride themselves on making foundations that blur the line between makeup and skincare; this liquid foundation is made with completely organic ingredients and offers long-lasting and full coverage alongside a light and silky texture that doesn’t clog pores. What’s more their foundations are suitable for any and all skin types – even sensitive skin and acne!
