A simple morning skincare routine for oily skin

Establishing a good skincare routine is one of the most important things you can do for your skin but it’s important to not only find a skincare routine that fits in with your busy schedule, but also one that works for your skin type! Here at Jan de Vries we know and love the fact that every single person has a different skin complexion which is why we’ve created easy and simple morning and evening skincare routines specially tailored for those of you with oily skin.

When we wake up in the morning our first thought isn’t always our skin, and, let’s be honest who has time for a complicated and long skincare routine? However that doesn’t mean that your skincare routine should fly out the window in the morning! Try our simple steps below using PHB’s all-natural products and your skin will feel refreshed in no time for the day ahead!

Step 1: Exfoliate using a gentle facial scrub

Why? When it comes to skincare finding a face wash that suits your skin can prove to be challenging – particularly if you have oily skin! All skin types benefit from a bit of face washing, they are the perfect way to remove any dirt and debris that has collected there. For oily skin in particular, face washes should be an important part of your daily routine as they can help to remove and balance out the oils in your skin. These excess oils, if allowed to build-up, can make it harder for your skin to shed cells naturally. This is perhaps one of the reasons that oily skin is more prone to breakouts – when dead skin cells hang around for too long they can block pores and can even eventually result in acne.

Our favourite face wash for oily skin? PHB’s Balancing Face Wash with Rosemary and Mint! Finding the perfect face wash for your skin type can be tough but, when it comes to oily skin, we champion PHB’s Balancing range. How often? For best results we’d recommend using this face wash twice daily (or once daily if you use PHB’s Balancing Cleanser in the evening). Using a face wash twice daily will help to prevent a build-up of excess oil from hanging around on your skin for too long to help protect those all-important pores!

Step 2: Reduce shine with an oil balancing toner

Why? Toners are a great way of shrinking pores and removing excess oils from the skin, however it is important to check the ingredients and opt for a natural alternative where possible because some contain harsh ingredients such as alcohol which can aggravate the skin.

Toners can balance out your skin’s pH balance; some skincare products, usually chemically pumped ones, can upset your skin’s natural acid/alkaline balance and cause excess oil, toners aim to help restore this balance and prevent nasty side effects of an imbalance occurring.

Our favourite toner for oily skin? PHB’s Balancing Facial Tonic with Tea Tree! If you’re looking for a toner that balances out your oil production without drying out or damaging your skin then this is it! The soothing Tea Tree acts as a natural astringent that sanitises skin and helps to reduce redness and irritation. It helps to restore the skin’s natural pH balance and closes pores to prevent dirt from making it’s way in there. Soothing on the skin, balances out your skin’s complexion and without the addition of any chemical nasties – this product is definitely a win in our book!

How often? Overuse of toners can trick your skin into overproducing oil however, if you are prone to oily skin from the get go, it is safe to use a toner twice daily. Although, I’d recommend that you start out using it once a day and only if you felt your skin needed a little boost, consider upping this to twice daily.

Step 3: Use a moisturiser that is friendly with oily skin

Why? Moisturiser is an absolute must in any skincare routine but it’s important to take the time to find a moisturiser that works for your skin type! What makes it tricky is that there are hundreds and hundreds of moisturisers out there – and not all of them are good for your skin!

Now, you may be wondering why oily skin needs moisturiser, surely excess oil means there’s too much moisture right? Not necessarily, moisturisers are used to improve the skin’s hydration levels – think water not oil! If you skip out on moisturiser your skin will dry out and, in turn, respond with an onslaught of excess oil to try to rehydrate skin which is not good if we want to reduce our oil production as well as prevent breakouts!

For oily skin you want to watch out for ingredients that will clog pores and try to find a moisturiser containing substances such as glycerine and Aloe Vera. Luckily, I have the perfect product recommendation…

Our favourite moisturiser for oily skin? PHB’s Balancing Moisturiser with Organic Lavender and Tamanu! How often? Of course it is important not to overdo it with a moisturiser if you have oily skin, however, as I have mentioned above it is also important to make sure that your skin is properly hydrated too. Therefore, I’d suggest that you use a moisturiser once a day to keep your hydration levels topped up.
